Symptom 1: Unresponsive Electronic Keypads & Dead Batteries

The short answer is: No. your lock is likely fine, but it is starving for amperage.
A classic misconception is that if the keypad lights up, flashes, or beeps, the battery must have enough power to open the safe. This is incorrect. It takes very little electrical current to power a tiny LED indicator or a chip sounder. However, it requires significant current (high amperage) to physically pull back the heavy brass or steel locking solenoid inside the door block. If your gun safe won't open with a dead battery, it is because the battery voltage has dropped below the threshold required to actuate the motor or solenoid.
If your safe has an internally housed battery, do not panic. High-quality safe manufacturers engineer their locks with external battery entry ports at the bottom of the keypad, external backup power contacts, or a hidden physical override bypass key. Symptom 2: Lockout Penalties and Non-Volatile Memory

If you pull the battery during a lockout penalty, you simply pause the lockout timer. When you plug the battery back in, the 15-to-20-minute freeze timer simply resumes from where it left off. Keep a fresh battery connected, walk away, and wait exactly 20 minutes without touching a single button before attempting your correct combination again.
Symptom 3: Mechanical Dial Calibration Drift & Drag
If you own a classic mechanical dial safe and find that your combination suddenly fails to unlock, you are likely dealing with dial calibration drift or internal component wear. Unlike electronic locks, mechanical dial wheels are physical plates with notches that must align precisely with an internal drive cam and drop lever.
Over decades of use, mechanical components can stretch or settle, or severe temperature swings in a garage or basement can expand the steel lock parts. This shifts the calibration index of your dial wheels. This is known as combination drift.
To bypass simple combination drift, try dialing your three-number combination exactly **one digit higher** or **one digit lower** than your standard numbers. For example, if your second number is 45, try dialing 46 or 44. If the dial opens, your wheel pack is drifting and requires immediate service before a total lock-out occurs.
